Retainers

Retainers are essential for preserving the results of orthodontic treatment, ensuring your smile stays beautifully aligned for years.

Types of Retainers in Colorado Springs, CO

Retainers are custom-made devices that hold your teeth in their new positions after braces or clear aligner treatment. Whether fixed or removable, retainers play a critical role in preventing teeth from shifting back. Most patients wear them full-time initially, then transition to nighttime use indefinitely. At Dental Nook, we offer removable and permanent retainers. Your dentist will help you determine the appropriate appliance for your smile. They are custom-made to ensure they fit comfortably.

  • What are the types of retainers?

Removable retainers come in two main types: Hawley retainers and clear plastic retainers. Both options must be worn as directed by your dentist to be effective and cleaned daily. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush with toothpaste or a baking soda solution to keep bacteria at bay. One of the biggest benefits of removable retainers is convenience. You can easily take them out when eating, brushing, or flossing.

    Hawley Retainers

Hawley retainers are the traditional wire-and-acrylic style and are known for their durability.

    • Cost: $150 to $340 per retainer
    • Lifespan: Can last up to 20 years with proper care
    • Pros: Extremely long-lasting and adjustable
    • Cons: A visible metal wire across the teeth

    Clear Plastic Retainers

Clear retainers are discreet, custom-molded, and nearly invisible when worn.

    • Cost: $100 to $300 for a single retainer; $400 to $1,200 for a set of four
    • Lifespan: Typically last six months to over a year
    • Pros: Aesthetic and comfortable
    • Cons: Less durable than Hawley, may need replacement more often

    Permanent Retainers

Permanent, or bonded, retainers are fixed to the back of your teeth and stay in place indefinitely—only needing repair or replacement if damaged or worn. They are ideal for those who want a maintenance-free option, but it’s important to maintain excellent oral hygiene to avoid buildup around the wire.

    • Cost: $225 to $550 each; up to $1,100 for both upper and lower
    • Pros: Always in place, no need to remember to wear it, highly durable
    • Cons: Can make brushing and flossing more challenging, and since they stay in during meals, they can trap more food and bacteria
  • What happens if I stop wearing my retainer?

Without a retainer, your teeth may gradually shift back to their original positions, undoing your orthodontic treatment.

  • Can I get a replacement retainer if I lose mine?

Yes! Contact our office right away so we can take new impressions and create a replacement before your teeth shift.

  • Are retainers painful?

Wearing a retainer is typically painless. You might initially feel some slight pressure, but this goes away quickly as you adjust.
